The first symposium was organized by Leon Lewillie and Jan Clarys (the “godfather” of BMS) in Belgium in 1970. Since then, the conference has been conducted every four years. The venue has mostly been Europe (Belgium – 1970, 1974, The Netherlands – 1982, Germany – 1986, England – 1990, Finland – 1998, France – 2002, Portugal – 2006, and Norway – 2010) with the exceptions of Canada – 1978, USA – 1994, Australia – 2014, and Japan – 2018.
